Aloha, all!
Time for another Stampin' Up! Only Challenge Team project! This time our theme was to have fun with a project for kids. Once again, the person who comes up with the themes was at a loss as to what to make. Go figure! How do I come up with these ideas, anyway! My saving grace was having a short discussion with one of my downline members who is young and has young children. She reminded me that kids love pinwheels, which I could make even if I didn't have the pinwheel set. But I DO have the pinwheel set – it's called, Sweets for the Sweet!
But then I had to figure out what to do with it, and which colors to use and which papers to use and which layout to use. Oh, my! My first saving grace was that I had just seen a layout that I really liked. The second was the realization that I could MAKE some pinwheels for my card. After that, once I homed in on the colors, it was easy to find the papers.
Well, not completely easy. After trying to choose just the "right" papers from the many patterned papers that use Daffodil Delight as their main color, I decided to make some "designer paper" of my own. I used all three of the pinwheel stamps in the stamp set for the largest of the layers, along with a smaller rectangular layer using Polka Dot Parade and the smallest layer using Summer Smooches.
My origin plan was to have the "jar" from the Holiday Catalog Stamp Set, Perfectly Preserved, lie across more than one layer. So I stamped it on a Window Sheet using Jet Black Stazon Ink. It turns out I didn't need to do that, but I had it all stamped and cut with the Cannery Set of Framelits Dies, so I went ahead and used it as it was.
For the Pinwheels, I used the 1-3/8" Square Punch to punch squares from Melon Mambo Patterns paper (the same set that I used for the layer mats), and caught the ends in the middle with 1/8" Silver Mini Brads (also in the Holiday Catalog). To finish the project, I cut the number "3" from Melon Mambo Card Stock using the Sizzix Typeset Alphabet Bigz Die.
I was originally going to make this a birthday card, but now I think it's going to become part of a framed set of numbers and designs from 1 to 9 that I'll make for a very young person in my family. I'm not sure how soon I'll get the project done, but you can be sure I'll share it here when I do!
Of course, I had to tie some part of this project together with ribbon, in this case the Melon Mambo 1/2" Scallop Dots Ribbon. Lots of polka dots in this project – including the Sizzix Perfect Polka Dots Embossing Folder, which I used to texturize the Whisper White Card Front!
OK – that's done and now I have to go unpack my latest box from Stampin' Up! What fun!!
Love the pinwheels! Great idea for a little one's bday card… even if this one won't stay a card. 🙂
I remember making pinwheels with paper, pencil (with eraser) and a straight pin when I was little! Thanks for bringing back a happy memory, Robin. I'm sure the young one receiving your pinwheel project is going to love it!
