Polka Dots in Blue!

June 29, 2012 by Robin

Aloha, all!

Today I'm sharing another card that I've made in response to a Create with Connie and Mary challenge, this time a sketch challenge.  Here's the sketch for the challenge…

And here's my card – not nearly as colorful as the sketch!

In fact, besides the Whisper White, there's only one other color in this card – Marina Mist!  This card wasn't one of those, "What if I tried this" cards.  It was more of an, "Uh-oh!  I don't have that" card!  Going into details about an "Uh-oh! I don't have that" card is not nearly as much fun as the other kind.  It's certainly not nearly as educational, unless you feel the need to be educated about ordering up supplies when you run out of them.  I'm the one who needs THAT education!

But I did end up with a card that I really like, and that's what's important at this stage of the game.  Suffice it to say that there are some things on this card I wouldn't have tried if I'd made it easy on myself and kept things in stock in my Craft Room.

     Like –

  • layering up three notched pennants with the same piece of Designer Series Paper – Polka Dot Parade!  I just turned the middle piece to the other side of the paper that I used for the two outside pieces.
  • and cutting out the circular flower image with the Floral Frames Framelits, and then accenting the motif in the middle of the cut-out section with another of the Framelits.

Once I had those two items out of the way, the rest of the card came together just as I'd envisioned it.  I wasn't sure in the beginning which of the Sassy Salutations sentiments I was going to use.  I saved that until the end – kind of like naming a baby.  Sometimes you really don't know what the card is going to "say" to you until you actually see it finished!  Of course, it wasn't all glued together at that point, because I've found I really do need to do any stamping before using an embossing folder, such as the Perfect Polks Dots Sizzix Folder I used for this card front.

So the lesson for today is that, even if you find you don't have something you feel you need to get a card done, you can make a very nice card just using what you've got on hand.  I did end up having a lot of fun with this card once I relaxed and just used what I had!  I hope you have some relaxing fun with your own paper crafting this weekend!

Oh, and don't forget that it's not too late to subscribe to the Create With Connie and Mary New Catalog Edition!  I've been following along, and I'm just amazed at some of the new ideas that the design team has come up with this time!  Just click on the link to the Create page and get all the details about signing up there!

I have been stamping and paper crafting for over 30 years, and have been an Independent Stampin' Up! Demonstrator for 14 years.

My favorite part of being a Stampin' Up! Demonstrator is teaching others to enjoy crafting themselves. Not only do I conduct classes in person, I write tutorials for teaching anyone who has internet access. No matter if you're in my area in The Villages in Florida or anywhere else in the world, let me know if there's something you'd like to learn! Read More…

I love how this card is mono-chromatic!  Lots of great details on it, too!   I particularly love how you cut the flower shape out of the strips and then built it back up again with the other shapes and topped it off with the button!  GREAT card!

Your card is my favorite of the challenge cards. Clean, eye-catching with the blue and white. I've saved it to my "cards to make" files.
