Peek-a-Boo Snowflake Card!

November 26, 2012 by Robin

Aloha, all!

Once again it's time for the Stampin' Up! Only Challenge over at the SUO Challenges Blog!  The challenge this time around is for us to make a card that's folded in an unusual way – "usual" being a piece of paper or card stock folded in half.  So, for "unusual," we had to do something other than the standard center-folded card.

As you know if you follow me fairly regularly, I love fun folds, and have made and even written tutorials for many of them.  But for this challenge I wanted to do something different.  I wasn't sure what it was going to be, and trying to think up something in my head wasn't working.  So off I went to my craft room table which I stocked liberally with retired papers and card stock.  What I ended up with wasn't all that unusual for me.  It's simply a gatefold card, but with a bit of a change to allow me to show off a gift inside.

Closed Card

This is the finished card, closed and ready to be put into a standard A2 sized envelope.  But it's a lot more fun looking at the card opened and with the "gift" – a snowflake ornament – shown off separately.

Robin's Card Opened

With the two inside corners of each side of the front gatefold turned down a bit, you can see the handmade Snowflake Ornament peeking out from inside the card.  With the card opened and the snowflake removed (for hanging on a tree, of course!) the card is still complete with a quote from the More Merry Messages Stamp Set, along with a simple greeting on one inside flap and a blank piece of card stock for signing the card on the other, which you can see here:

QUICK UPDATE:  My sister-in-law (who's also my Stampin' Up! downline) remarked that this looked just like a winter sweater.  So of course I immediately thought of the Stampin' Up! Sweater Trim and had an aha moment.  Why not use some Gumball Green Sweater Trim on my card!

Here's a list of the Stampin' Up! products that I used in this card:

  • Gumball Green, Cherry Cobbler and Whisper White Card Stock
  • Snow Festival Designer Series Paper (from Stampin' Up!'s Holiday Catalog)
  • Snow Flurry Bigz Die (from the Holiday Catalog)
  • Northern Flurry Embossing Folder
  • More Merry Messages Stamp Set
  • Window Frames Framelits Set (Holiday Catalog)
  • Designer Label Punch
  • Cherry Cobbler Baker's Twine
  • Whisper White Brad
  • Cherry Cobbler Scallop Dots Ribbon (for the Belly Band)

And there's a FREE TUTORIAL here if you'd like to try this card yourself!

I love to call lots of the folds that I use, "Fun Folds."  This is certainly a Fun Fold, and I had lots of fun making it.  If you have a favorite Fun Fold, I hope you'll make one and share it with us over at SUO Challenges!

This is totally brilliant, Robin!  Love how you showcase the gift.  Such a modern take on the gatefold!  Pinning to try later (thanks for the tutorial)!

What a fun twist on a gate-fold card! Love the way you have the peekaboo view of the ornament inside. Too stinking' clever!!
