A New Take on an Old Favorite!

March 8, 2019 by Robin

Aloha, all!

One of my favorite kinds of paper design is using quilting patterns to make designs for cards. While I love to sew myself, there really is room for just one major hobby in my Craft Room. By “major,” I means something that takes over a whole room even when you have rights to only half the room.

Anyway, here I am again having the urge to make quilt-pattern cards again! So, of course, I went back to a design I’d made before as that was the simplest way to get a card done in no time at all.

I made this Tulip design using the luscious Garden Impressions 6″ x 6″ Designer Series Paper set.  The design is 4-1/2″ square, and is made up primarily of 3/4″ squares. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if Stampin’ Up! introduced a 3/4″ square punch for me to use with a project like this. But they haven’t – or maybe they had one back in the day and I lost mine? Whatever, I cut each of these squares with my Paper Trimmer, including any of the diagonals on the larger pieces.

I didn’t add a sentiment to the front of this card as I plan for it to be one of a series of cards that I include in a set of note cards that I’ll be featuring in my Spring 2019 Card Layout Tutorial eBook. I’m working on it some every week, and am making lots of progress. That will slow down when I embark on a trip to the U.S. Mainland later this month.

If you decide to try this out (the pattern really is pretty straight forward), I have one and a half suggestions that should help you get a nice clean line (well, as clean as possible with paper and ink!).  First use Multipurpose Liquid Glue. That will give you the opportunity to scootch your little squares right into the place where you want them. Then, to start gluing, begin with that top left corner square. Once it’s in place, you should be good to go with the rest of them. I started my first try at this with the diagonals on the bottom and right, and those diagonals just do not like to play nice if you’ve cut them just the teensiest bit “wrong.”

How do I know this? This is the first card I made. By the time I got to the top left, I no longer had a square and things were all off kilter. So I ended up trimming 1/8″ off, a little here, a little there, until I ended up with a square – finally. No such trouble when I started at the top left. Oh, and by the way – I made this card with the Nature’s Poem Designer Series Paper.

I hope you’ve enjoyed my little trip into the past – I’ll be visiting there again soon, I’m sure. But what I find will be in my new Tutorial eBook! Over the next week right here, I’m going to share some of the fun cards I received in that swap I participated in last month!

Happy Stamping!
