Aloha, all!
If you've been following me for any length of time, you know that color challenges are just not my favorite. I like to pick a color that reflects the mood I'm in at the moment, and then work from there. To have someone else strongly suggest a particular combo – well, it doesn't usually work for me!
But this week I was actually intrigued by a color challenge and decided to see what I could do with it!
As you might guess by now, the challenge was to use Gray and Yellow. The intro to the challenge said that this was a very current color combo. As I'm pretty not much of a "current" person, I said to myself, "Who knew?!"
Not only did the color combo intrigue me, it made a particular design pop right into my head. Off I went with two of the triangles from Stampin' Up!'s "Geometrical" Stamp Set. (I had to put quotes around the stamp set name because it's the designs that are geometrical, not the stamp set – image a stamp set in a hexagonal box!)
To make the triangles overlap successfully, I masked them all up the line. I stamped the first dotted triangle using Daffodil Delight Classic Ink, matted it and then stamped the triangle design stamp using Basic Gray Classic Ink. I actually stamped the line of triangles on a larger piece of Whisper White Cardstock and then trimmed it to fit the card's design (which I hadn't completely thought out when I was stamping the triangles).
Once the triangles worked out as I wanted them, the design did then come together pretty quickly. Of course I wanted to use the geometrical style Arrows Embossing Folder (from the current Stampin' Up! Occasions Catalog), and it turned out beautifully on the Basic Gray Cardstock. After that, it was easy to figure out the layering for the triangle strip. This design cried out for a horizontal element, so out came the seldom-used (in Robin's Craft Room) Daffodil Delight Seam Binding Ribbon. I squared off the ends because that seemed to be a nice complement to the overall design.
I didn't want to "spoil" the overall look of the card with another set of layers for a sentiment. Then I remembered that another Stampin' Up! demonstrator whose work I follow had recently used the word "hi" from the Circle Card Thinlit Set. I cut that beauty out of the Daffodil Delight Cardstock and the card was done!
And this card was a LOT of fun to make, especially with the masking, a technique that I've been using a lot lately. I forgot how much fun it was to make designs with overlapping images.
Thanks for stopping by my blog today – and don't forget that there are other ways to get designs, tutorials and other ideas from Robin's Craft Room! Happy Stamping!
